"Outlook is trying to retrieve data from the Microsoft Exchange Server"
I'm receiving this error on all outlook client PCs throughout the organization. Running windows server 2003 latest SP with Exchange 2003 also with latest SP. Both Exchange and DC are on the same server. I have looked at server performance, 16 processors with 16 GB of RAM, which does not seem to be the issue. Server CPU utilization is very low. Has anyone ran into similar issues? Any help would be great. Thanks Bryan

Exchange application can not use more than 4GB of Ram on server, and adding more Ram may cause performace issue because system has to maintain Free Page file indexes. The error : Outlook is trying to retrieve data from the Microsoft Exchange Server is a genric error please work on following points. Try Cutting down RPC connection with exchange server. 1. From the Outlook client workstation use Tracert to determine how many hops from the impacted Outlook Client to the Exchange Server? What devices do the IP Addresses map to? 2. Network Card. Configurations and settings need to be confirmed. These steps are to be taken on the affected workstation. (Note: these instructions are for how to obtain the settings in Windows XP, but these settings should be checked for any OS): Are there any External DNS Servers listed in the Primary or Secondary DNS Entries? Is your Local Area Connection at the top of the binding order? Start > Control Panel > Network Connections > Advanced > Advanced Settings - Make sure the in the connections tab the Local Area Connection is on top. Click OK. What card is installed and what driver? Local Area Connection > Right Click > Properties > Select the Configure Button > Select the Driver Tab. What is the Date and Version? Now Select the Advanced tab > In the Property Window, is TCP Checksum Offloading enabled? Please see screen shot below. In this instance the value for Checksum Offloading is not set. It can be listed as any of the following: RX Checksum Offloading TX Checksum Offloading TCP Checksum Offloading Alternatively, you can also disable this in the registry: 904946 You experience intermittent communication failure between computers that are running Windows XP or Windows Server 2003 http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;904946 3. Try turning off the Planner Options Feature. 4. Please check for Item counts at each folder level, If it is more than 5000 for exchang 2003 - you may see performace issue. We recommend that you maintain a range of 3,500 to 5,000 items in a folder depending on the capacity of the Exchange Server environment. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/905803 5. Take a look at the Add-Ins or Comm Add-Ins that are loaded in Outlook. There are new third party and free utilities that come out all the time. 6. Are any PST files stored on a network share?Best Rgds, Ashish | Unified Comunication | MCTS | MCITP | Please remember to select option "Propose As Answer" if solution work for you | My posts hold no assurances, no promises, and they measured no rights.

If running Windows 2003 SP2 on the server (or workstation for that matter), or Windows 2003 SP1 with the Scalable Networking Pack, try disabling the TCP Chimney feature as follows: Open a command prompt and type the following: Netsh int ip set chimney DISABLED See the WebLog; Windows 2003 Scalable Networking pack and its possible effects on Exchange http://msexchangeteam.com/archive/2007/07/18/446400.aspxBest Rgds, Ashish | Unified Comunication | MCTS | MCITP | Please remember to select option "Propose As Answer" if solution work for you | My posts hold no assurances, no promises, and they measured no rights.

Ashish, Answers to your questions 1. 1 hop to the server with IP address resolution 2. Yes we have DNS running on this server and another DNS entry is for our parent domain controller running dns. But no external DNS entries. Local Area Connection is at the top of the bindings NIC is HP NC382i DP Multifunction Gigabit Server Adapter Version 5.2.17.0 Driver Date 12/28/2009 IPv4 Checksum Offloading is set to Tx/Rx enabled 3. Why turn off the planner object feature? 4. 1 user has 5000 message everyone else is lower 5. No add-ins used 6. All outlook accounts data files are on server not located on a network drive share.

I have also ran the Netsh int ip set chimney DISABLED command and still receive the same message off and on. I cannot tell if a reboot clears it up temporarily because it happens off and on at different times.

what about serach engines on clinets computers, they cause to much RPS traffic to exchange servers. If there are please disable them. Do you see any events related to perf issues on exchange box applicationa and system both?Best Rgds, Ashish | Unified Comunication | MCTS | MCITP | Please remember to select option "Propose As Answer" if solution work for you | My posts hold no assurances, no promises, and they measured no rights.

Hi, 1. Please restart exchange server to resolve any potential issues when it is possible. 2. If the issue persists, please open Event viewer to check if there is any error relating to this problem. If yes, please post here for further research. Please remember to click Mark as Answer on the post that helps you, and to click Unmark as Answer if a marked post does not actually answer your question.
